Fly Control for Your Horse Barn

If you have a horse barn, you need fly control and bug slayer has answer for you. If you ever had the occasion to watch a horse covered with flies, stressed, swatting with that big old bushy tail for all they're worth trying to get relief from the onslaught of flies you know how important it is to control the fly population around your horse barn.

We offer an integrated fly management approach to horse barn owners. Many of the ideas are more of a common sense approach; such as manure control and barn cleanliness. Using additives include to inhibit fly larva reproduction, and an insecticide wipe to control flies on animals out in the pasture. But can't always be there in many times you need additional help to control the fly population around your barn areas. That's where the bug slayer, automatic fly and mosquito control system will tie up all the loose ends.

Bug slayer installs a permanent, auto-spray fly management system in around horse barn areas. The system consists of a reservoir tank that carries a mild insecticide, a series of strategically placed misting nozzles around the barn area. The heart and soul of the system is the automatic pump, motor and timer that gives you the ability to control the times and duration of spray treatments that you need to control the pest population in your barn. Bug slayer also services the automatic fly spray units on a periodic basis, as well as maintain chemical fill regiments that will have the greatest impact on the fly population. You need to protect your investment, you need a bug slayer automatic insect management system.

I live in a neighborhood filled with custom homes, that is many of the floor plans may be somewhat similar, but the elevations including landscaping and outdoor amenities all different from yard to yard. You get the idea, we all put our personal touch on the homes we live in and each individualized nuance may present a different opportunity for mosquito growth and reproduction.

Given the fact that each home and yard are somewhat different, a customized approach to mosquito control is paramount in the ultimate effectiveness of the mosquito misting system installed. We've had the opportunity since 2002 to install systems in everything from mobile homes to 40,000 square-foot mansions and just about everything in between. We not only take into consideration the size of the area that needs to be treated but also your budgetary constraints, as we know that the maximum return on your investment in a mosquito misting system is just as important to young family starting out as to a business person that's made their fortune.

In our initial interview, we inspect your property and look for areas of mosquito infestation and mosquito breeding opportunities. We also look for landscape features as well as outdoor entertainment areas that may need considerable attention in the treatment process. We also look at construction and building materials that are used, which assist us in strategic nozzle placement and attachment points for mosquito misting equipment. We take the time to question you the homeowner as to what your most pressing issue is for mosquito control; time you like to entertaining outdoors, areas you use most frequently, potential plans for new outdoor amenities they can be built into the system. We look at the possibility of future expansions of the system if your needs change. And in the process of formulating a game plan to take back your yard, we analyzed the data we've gathered and make recommendations as to the best approach to relieve your suffering. Our approach is simple and yet straightforward and has three basic tenets:

Larva side applications put us on the front end of mosquito control. By identifying the existing larva population in and around the yard area, we have an indicator of the potential mosquito infestation you may be up against. Many times will use a larvasiding application, on areas that are not able to be sprayed, potted plants inside a screen enclosure, gutters that don't drain, underground French drains the hold water. In larvaecide application may be the critical factor in bringing about the overall desired outcome for your mosquito control. If you need somebody that can think outside of the box, you need a bug slayer.

The bug slayer mosquito control system kills and repels mosquitoes all over your property. Since 2002, bug slayer has installed over 1000 systems in the Tampa Bay area and over 3000 systems have been sold through authorized dealers throughout the United States. The basic premise of the system is to strategically place high pressure misting nozzles around your property in areas that harbor nuisance insects: mosquitoes, no see ums, midges, wasps, spiders and biting flies. The nozzles are fed from a reservoir tank that carries a solution that is pumped out on an automatic timed basis. A blast of 60 seconds of this solution, two or three times a day, at specific times, in strategic locations, will eliminate the target past and create a controlled environment for you to enjoy. The concept is a simple one, to preemptively ambush, the unsuspecting target past, before they have the opportunity to take your blood involuntarily. When only the best will do, it's a bug slayer system.

The mosquito is not a difficult insect to kill, if you have the right tools and the knowledge of their habitat. In developing the bug slayer mosquito control system, we analyzed the specific environment where the mosquitoes live and breed as well as the most innovative ways of eliminating the pest. As we have learned through years of experience, may organic plant oils as well as synthetic insecticides can have a great impact on adult mosquitoes. The key is in delivering the right product, in the right dose to not only kill the bug, but to be environmentally responsible in the process. The bug slayer system will automatically treat this suspect environment on a daily basis, with multiple applications, at high activity times, that will have the greatest impact on the mosquito population. The key is not only to kill the adult mosquitoes, but to break the lifecycle as well as repelling any newcomers to the area. Get a bug slayer system, the bite stops here.

It's been said if you thought mosquitoes were bad, wait until your attacked by sandflies or No see-ums. If you can imagine of cloud of tiny mosquitoes attacking you all at one time, its like a swarm, that's the no see-um.. They are relentless hunters, and have to take a blood meal just like a mosquito to survive. They are susceptible to the same products that kill and repel mosquitoes. The bug slayer system kills and repels no see um's and sandflies. Unlike mosquitoes, no see-ums tend to attack only at dusk and dawn. The attacks normally last for an hour or two, unlike mosquitoes the bite all night long. The same chemicals that are used in the bug slayer system for mosquitoes, work well on no see-ums. The times of treatments differ based on the activity of the no see-ums, with the strategic nozzle placement variables that seek to attack the no see um's at different levels and locations. With consistent daily, automatic repetitive applications, no see-um control can be attained with the bug slayer system.

The bug slayer mosquito control system, also kills spiders. The only good spider is a dead spider, you've guessed it, I hate spiders. Spiders can be an insidious problem, and the fact you seldom see them when you're trying to kill them. They tend to be held up in a crack or crevas, waiting for an unsuspecting bug to come by or touch their web. Spiders usually hunt at night, when you're in bed, there everywhere. Just walk out in the morning, and have a combat you hang around your face, you know that spider was there.

The bug slayer system, we attack spiders at night, when they are active. We strategically place our misting nozzles where the spiders high activity areas are: along the eaves, around pool screens, in trees and under decks. We set the bug slayer system, to spray three or four times per night at intervals that will directly spray the spider on their body. With this type of application will eliminate the spider population from areas you frequent outdoors. You need a bug slayer system, for spider control, when only the best will do.

The aquatic Midge looks like a blind mosquito, that emerges from a freshwater body of water during the night. The insect is drawn to light colors or to the lights on your house. The onslaught of it aquatic Midge invasion may seem epic like something out of the Bible. An emergence of aquatic midges may number in the hundreds of thousands, all at once. The bug slayer system is extremely effective in eliminating the aquatic Midge. Through a strategic placement of nozzles, in and around outdoor seating areas, along yard areas where the midges will travel, and near the water where they emerge as the game plan for their control. The bug slayer system will automatically administer, 3 to 4 strategic 60 second applications of solution to your outdoor effective areas. The sprays will kill all insects to come in contact with the solution. We installed over 250 systems specifically to eliminate the aquatic Midge in the Tampa Bay area, with great success. If you have a Midge problem, you need a bug slayer.

In central Florida, wasps and mud daubers are a nuisance pest. The nest they build can damage or degrade the outward appearance of your home. Wasps and mud daubers are in the same family, but instinctively live in different structures. Wasps build paper houses the dangle from the ease of your house the plants in your yard. Mud daubers on the other hand build mud structures that attach to the upper sides of your home. Both species can be aggressive when approached. To eliminate wasps and mud daubers, a bug slayer system can be very effective to achieve end goal. Through a series of strategically placed misting nozzles in areas where the target insect builds its home, the bug slayer system will spray its chemical solution at specific, automatic timed settings. The spray will kill and repel both wasps and mud daubers on contact and keep them from coming back.

For over 30 years, auto spray insect misting systems have been used in horse barns throughout the country to control flies and other nuisance insects. Almost 10 years ago, we built the first prototype system, based on one used in a horse barn in the Tampa Bay area. The system was very basic, with very generic features and seemed somewhat antiquated, but it worked. Through our own research and development, bug slayer innovated a unit that would take into consideration the best functionality of the older systems, and integrate convenience and safety features that would make it viable not only for horse barns, and killing flies, but also complete insect control for any backyard setting. Our system still kills flies in horse barns they in and day out, without any effect on the animals or people around those horse barns. We install our system over 100 barns in the Tampa Bay area, for fly, spider in mosquito control.

           How Bug Slayer Works

The bug slayer system works like having your own, full-time, pest control operator working in your yard, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our technician will analyze your property, taking into considerations our primary objectives: safety first, effectiveness, and aesthetics. The bug slayer system is an auto spray insect management system. First there is a reservoir tank which carries our product to be metered out through the system. Secondly, the pump, motor and timer which control the application of the product, both on a manual basis with a remote control or on automatic timed sprays. Thirdly, the network of strategically placed misting nozzles throughout the yard area, taking into consideration harborage and breeding areas of mosquitoes, no see um's and other flying and biting insects. The concept is a simple one, to preemptively ambush the unsuspecting target past, before they have a chance to react. We kill them all before they have a chance to attack you.

Why is Bug Slayer More Effective

We don't believe you could argue with success. We've had over 10 years of experience in the mosquito control business. We have installed over 1000 systems in the Tampa Bay area. There's probably no structure in Tampa Bay that we haven't had success on a similar project. We've installed systems on trailers two 40,000 square-foot mansions and everything in between. We have already figured out, what the other guys are learning. We listen to your concerns, we know what's important to you, we desire to serve you for years to come in we take very seriously the opportunity that you give us. We care about the people we serve, and will do whatever it takes to bring about a positive outcome. It's not just our superior equipment or the chemicals we use, it's the people we are don't give you the peace of mind that nobody does it better than bug slayer.

We Use Air Flow in Mosquito Control

Certain applications just work better, and necessity is the mother of invention. Over the years we've learned certain areas may need something else for mosquito control. We've had large, deep, porches that could not be treated effectively with traditional mosquito misting applications. Since some of the chemicals we used over the years have been environmentally sensitive not been able to spray ever tidal waters, that our clients wanted to hang out on the dock. Both of these applications used airflow with automatic mosquito misting systems. How does it work? A 5 to 7 mile per hour breeze makes it impossible for a mosquito to land and bite a victim. By adding airflow from one of a high velocity, outdoor rated, sealed motor fan, we can guarantee enough air flow to enhance any existing mosquito control application and allow freedom to use the amenities desired. We are innovative at bug slayer.

The bug slayer system was created not only to be the most effective mosquito killing apparatus but focuses on three Paramount objectives. To apply an insecticide product, to a target past, in a manner that would bring about a positive outcome for the homeowner, with the least potential of harm to either the environment, or the purchaser of the system. (SAFETY FIRST) To reduce the mosquito population, to a point that you may enjoy the outdoor areas, that you use and cherish and pay property taxes on. This is done by making sure the problem areas are identified, the proper equipment is installed, to bring about a positive outcome. (EFFACACY) to install a system that is felt and not seen. This is done by taking into consideration all landscape and hard scape features, building structures, colors and general Outlook of the completed project. (AESTHETICS)

Aside from the potential of having a deadly virus transmitted to you by mosquito bite, there can be many side effects and allergic reactions to the bite itself. Many of the mosquito saliva proteins can cause allergic reactions, however most people display only swelling and itching at the bite area. Basic first aid measures usually suffice for the average mosquito bite. Usually some type of antiseptic white should be applied to the bite seen. If additional swelling occurs use ice were some type of lotion the contains a hydrocortisone cream to reduce the swelling and potentially stop itching. Caladril or calamine lotion are seem to work for me with a bad bite. Never scratch a bite location, easier said for adults than little kids, but it can increase the potential for infections. Common sense should be the rule of thumb for mosquito bites. There are extenuating circumstances where severe allergic reactions may take place, see medical advice in these situations.

           The Actual Mosquito Bite

Female mosquitoes hunt their blood host by detecting organic substances such as carbon dioxide and body odors we give off a large part of the mosquito's sense of smell is devoted to stiffing out blood sources. Prior to and during the blood feeding, mosquitoes inject saliva into the bodies of their victim, which is really creepy. This is done through a unique mouth part that the species has adapted to piercing the skin. As the mosquito drives her hypodermic needle through the skin, the saliva with anticoagulant is pumped down through the tube to prevent clotting is the blood is drawn up. The feeding process of the mosquito will persist as long as she is not disturbed. She will engorge herself with the victim's blood. In some cases the female can take up to 10 times her body weight in blood before leaving her unsuspecting victim. That little bump you get, is the leftovers from her saliva, her calling card, thank you for dinner.

Most of us won't ever experience an allergic reaction from mosquito bite. As we're bitten over the years the impact of mosquito bites reduce with time, our bodies get used to them. More severe reactions to mosquito bites are called, " Skeeter syndrome". These may result in blistering rashes, bruises, or large areas of swelling at the bite location. People, who experience extremely large areas of swelling after a mosquito bite, such as an entire arm or leg for example, would be considered as having " Skeeter syndrome". In some rare situations, some people may experience anaphylaxis after being bitten by mosquito. Some people may also experience hives swelling asthma type symptoms, typically these occur within minutes after the bite. People who are at higher risk of developing allergies to mosquito bites may have a meeting deficiency disorders, such as AIDS or cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma, and should limit their outdoor stays.

We try many of the topical anesthetics such as hydrocortisone cream antihistamines like Benadryl, gold bond medicated cream, Tiger balm, Caladril,. And wise tales such as toothpaste, mouthwash, vinegar, honey, underarm deodorant, ammonia, bleach, nail polish, tobacco products rabbit on the bite area and also been known to help. NASA try some natural oils such as tea tree oil, lavender oil, witch hazel, or Cedar oil were try some lemon and lime juice or even a banana peel rubbed on the bite area sounds crazy but may work.

How We Can Control Mosquitos

Over the past few years as the economy slowed down, so did the tax revenues for many of the counties in the Tampa Bay area. With the reduction in monies available, many of the mosquito control districts have had to curtail their efforts somewhat to more reactionary mosquito control treatments than continuous ongoing mosquito management efforts of the past. Individuals that are concerned about the health and well-being of their families and pets need to be proactive in their personal mosquito control efforts. Integrated pest management systems need to be implemented by individuals through private companies to control mosquitoes and other biting pests around your home. The bug slayer system would do nicely.

           Mosquitoes Misting and Sprays

An integrated pest management approach makes the most sense for mosquito control here in the Tampa Bay area. There are many spray products that can be applied on an individual basis that will have an impact on the mosquito population. These products have a good knock down, but long term effectiveness is sketchy, especially during the rainy season. The beauty of an automatic mosquito misting system is the ability to reach the areas where the bugs reside, treating these areas on a daily ongoing basis, with a product that is environmentally responsible yet intolerable for mosquitoes. The automatic timed sprays with the mosquito misting system can coincide with the highest periods of mosquito activity in the yard area, having the maximum impact on the mosquito population.

           Remove Stagnant Water

The first part of mosquito control is to limit the opportunities for mosquito breeding and reproduction. The removal of stagnant water and the containers of stagnant water are paramount in mosquito control efforts. It's funny, to beat a mosquito, you have to think like a mosquito. There are so many places outdoors they can hold water that you need to be aware of and able to remove in order to limit the potential for stagnant water on your property. This list is not exhaustive but is a good starting point: visible pools of water, such as pots, pools and water features. Second area might not be as obvious, gutters, underground runoff drains, tree holes, heavy shaded areas under shrubs and eaves. These areas may hold enough water to breed mosquitoes, just a pile of leaves cupped up underneath your shrubs may hold enough water to be mosquitoes.

           Import Natural Predators

God created mosquitoes, he also created creatures that eat mosquitoes and that is good. Since the mosquito is pretty far down the food chain, there's a lot of larger creatures that find them a tasty morsel. For larva consumption, that is the pre-emergent mosquitoes there are different types of fish they can be introduced into an outdoor pond that may help control the mosquito population. Once the mosquito has emerged as an adult again they are predators up the food chain the key and have an impact on the mosquito population. For example there are certain lizards the tend to be very aggressive toward mosquitoes. Bats have been used over the years is a natural mosquito predator. I'm not sure if you can import dragonflies but they seem to have a field day on mosquitoes. You may have some of these natural predators already working for you, but they won't get them all especially in this Tampa Bay environment.

           Mosquito Nets and Screening

Mosquito nets and screens have been used for years all over the world. If you live in a tent you better have a mosquito net. I would prefer motor coach for camping outdoors. Since most of us in the Tampa Bay area have a house, and many of us quite a nice house some type of screening has been somewhat a mosquito barrier for years. Screens over swimming pools, screens around lanai's, garage door screens, greenhouse screens, window screens all provide an immediate barrier between you and mosquitoes outdoors. Screens have their limitations, if you go outside the screen you may get eaten. If you have a hole in your screen you may get eaten. If you're screens are dirty, you will be able to see through them. If we have a windstorm, the takes away your screen enclosure, insurance won't pay for it. There is an alternative to mosquito nets and screens, it's called the bug slayer mosquito control system.

           Natural Mosquito Repellents

Mosquito repellents work on the principle the table and make the people that where the repellents less desirable to the mosquito. Repellents do not kill mosquitoes, they just make the area prone to attacks somewhat hidden by odor or chemically toxic to a certain extent. The time limit on repellent effectiveness is usually no more than three hours. DEET has been the primary product used as a synthetic chemical for repellents. There are a number of natural plant oil based products on the market as repellents as well. The current line of products that are sold over-the-counter have been determined to present no health concerns under normal use. There's also a synthetic pesticide spray products that are available on the market is used as a repellent that attached to your belt. All or most of these products will make you less attractive to mosquitoes, but the application is one that puts the repellent, or insecticide directly on you. You be the judge.

           Mosquito Repellent Plants

There are a number plants in the marketplace that are touted as natural mosquito repellents. In my over 10 years of pest-control experience I haven't found a plant that would repel mosquitoes over a significant distance to make it effective to repel mosquitoes from biting my clients. All of the plants that I am listing will repel mosquitoes, they will need these plants were really hang around him. Citronella, masks your set in makes it harder for mosquitoes to find you. Horsemint is a perennial plant much the same as citronella it has a strong odor and confuses the mosquito's sense of smell. Marigolds are ornamentals they contain Pyrethrin that kills insects. Catnip, has been found more effective than DEET and some other commercial insect repellents. If you play of these plants all over by the thousands, they may repellent of mosquitoes to help. Each individual plan on its own does not have the repellency to be effective.

Mosquito repellent candles and coils work to a certain extent. You must be sitting with in the body of smoke given off by the candles are coils to have any hope of repelling mosquitoes. It is the smoke given off by the candles and coils that does two things to the mosquito: it covers the carbon dioxide set that you give off when you breed, it also hides you somewhat inside the smoke cloud the billows from the burning instrument. The candle or coils are only effective if there is no air movement, if the air blows the smoke that you're hiding in a way the mosquitoes will still find and bites you. In addition to the problem with air flow is the fact that unless the smoke from the coils completely envelops you all the way down to your feet you'll be subject to attacks in uncovered areas. If your ankles are uncovered in the smoke is not around your ankles, they will get bitten by a mosquito looking for a meal. The candles are coils will either burn a natural plan oil-based product or an insecticide that you sit inside the cloud and brief and get all over you while the coil is burning. The choice is yours.

I hate bugs, especially mosquitoes. There's nothing that sounds neater that a bug zapper going off electrocuting a mosquito. The thought of sitting in your backyard and having a machine breath for you that attracts mosquitoes and sucks them in and suffocates them, sounds pretty good too. There's only one problem, they don't work as well as touted. The bug zapper, does electrocute bugs that are attracted to a black light inside the machine. You may zap mosquitoes with this machine, the death count is 10-1 good bugs to mosquitoes, a university survey. The CO2 generating machines that attract mosquitoes and suffocates them, they attract all your neighbors mosquitoes to your yard the may stop by and bite you on the way to the machine. They also, don't kill enough of the mosquitoes the live in your own yard to make them effective. They also are very high maintenance for the user adding both propane tanks and chemicals on a regular basis. In over 10 years of professional pest control experience over 75% of my customers use our service had one or both of these devices in their yard for mosquito control before we arrived to provide our service.

Every outdoorsman has a story about being stuck somewhere in being mauled by bloodsucking mosquitoes. They always claim needing a blood transfusion after the incident, but there's never been a record of a mosquito attack that's taken that much blood, even though a female mosquito can consume 10 times her body weight in one blood meal. The dangers of mosquito bites is the potential disease that the mosquito carries: malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus, equine encephalitis, etc. in the list goes on. In the Tampa Bay area, you are susceptible to anyone of these mosquito borne diseases through the bite of one infected insect.

With the mosquito, is not that they spit on you, they spit in you. When the female mosquito bites you, she injects saliva into you in order to take your blood. The contents of her saliva are: anticoagulants, certain enzymes, and possible pathogens that carry disease. For mosquito it's quite a cocktail she injects, she opens the wound, injects her saliva which gives her the ability to draw more blood more quickly, and in the aftermath leaves her host with either a welt from her visit, or a disease that may kill the host.

The Anopheles mosquito is the primary carrier of the malaria virus. Malaria kills millions of people around the world annually. This mosquito is primarily a nighttime hunter, and those in tropical and subtropical environments. The disease was thought to be eradicated in the state of Florida around 1935, however there have been cases of the disease in 1990, 1996 and in 2003. There have been no known cases of malaria reported in the Tampa Bay area.

The dengue virus reappeared in Florida after almost 60 years of being dormant in 2009. Last year, there were 28 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Florida. In 2012, there were 1118 cases of West Nile virus reported in the United States with 41 deaths resulting. There were 12 cases of West Nile reported in Florida.

Your breath is a dead giveaway. Female mosquitoes have an acute sense of smell. Female mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, because they instinctively know that he warm-blooded host exhales this byproduct. A female mosquito can sense carbon dioxide from as far away as 50 to 75 feet. She will fly in a zigzag pattern, through the plume of carbon dioxide that you give off until she pinpoints her target for a blood meal. All warm-blooded creatures give off carbon dioxide when they breathe and all warm-blooded creatures are targeted by mosquitoes in the same way. The volume of carbon dioxide you give off is also be a factor in the targeting mechanism for the female mosquito.

           Sweat Attracts Mosquitoes

Sweat smells good to mosquitoes. Actually, it's the bacteria from the sweat you give off that attracts the mosquito to you. Have you ever noticed how mosquitoes tend to swarm around her ankles and feet? The answer is your feet stink. There is a distinct bacteria, that gives off a distinct odor, they can draw mosquitoes directly to an open area for biting. If you tend to perspire heavily when outdoors, mosquitoes can find you more easily and will tend to feed on you because of your sweat. If you consume alcoholic beverage, as your body metabolizes the alcohol, you tend to sweat, thus attracting mosquitoes. The perfect storm, is a bunch of guys, drinking beer in their flip-flops on the back patio.

Mosquitoes love dark colors. Mosquitoes not only feels more protected in a dark colored environment because of the camouflage impact it has, but sees dark colors better based on their visual acuity. A female mosquito is attracted to black, dark blues, dark greens and browns without exception. You'll find if you wear light colors: white, tans, khaki you'll be target less by hungry bloodsucking mosquitoes.

           Mosquitoes are Visual Hunters

Researchers shown the mosquitoes are visual hunters. Not only are they able to delineate between light and dark colored clothing, but they easily pick up the heat signals that you give off. It's kind of like that predator movie, where you see this almost thermal image of the alien out there somewhere. Instinctively, the female mosquito is directed to a warm-blooded host by the thermal image you give off. She knows there is the potential for a blood meal based on the body heat you give off. If your skin temperature is hotter than the person standing just next to you, you will be the target of the next attack.

Mosquito Feeding Habits

Mosquitoes are always hungry, and as long as they can fly, they will feed. Mosquitoes tend to be more active at certain times of the year based in the environment. Mosquitoes also tend to feed more often from dusk to dawn, evening hours. There are certain species of mosquitoes that are daytime feeders, you've probably seen those little black ankle bitters attack even in daylight hours. Many of the species carry disease also. Mosquitoes have a constant need to replenish their energy source on an ongoing basis, with the females also needing protein for a reproduction.

           Male Mosquito Feeding Habits

Male mosquitoes do two things: they eat and they breed. Throughout the adult life of a male mosquito they feed on plant nectar only for energy. The male can determine preferred nectar sources through an ongoing foraging process. The plant nectar is drawn from any flowering plants, shrubs and trees. Once the male mosquito has fed, and begins a continuous search for a suitable female to breed with. The male, locates the female by sound, listening for the high pitch flapping of the wings of the female mosquito. Once located the male will pass on his seed to the female. As you might imagine it takes a lot of energy to catch of flying female mosquito, the male is continuously building energy for this encounter.

           Female Mosquito Feeding Habits

The female mosquito also needs plant nectar for energy, but that's where the similarity ends to feeding habits being the same as a male mosquito. The female mosquito also needs protein in the reproductive process. The protein that the female mosquito feeds on his the blood of the warm-blooded host. Female mosquitoes are opportunity hunters, and will take a blood meal wherever it's convenient. Most female mosquitoes feed on birds and wild animals in an outdoor setting. Because man and domestic animals also live within the confines of the female mosquitoes feeding range, they to are opportunities for blood meals. Female mosquitoes feed on domestic livestock, pets: birds, dogs, cats and human beings in an urban or suburban environment. Female mosquitoes are attracted to the warm-blooded host by carbon dioxide, odors and visual attractants.

There's great truth way mosquito breeds has an impact on that environment. Most mosquitoes don't travel more than 100 yards from where they emerge as adults during the lifetime. If your yard is prone to holding stagnant water in any significant quantity your is greater risk for breeding generations of mosquitoes is living in the Everglades. Most homes in the Tampa Bay area provide great shade cover for mosquitoes to harbor due to the tropical landscape that we all enjoy. Because of frequent watering, many areas tend to hold small amounts of water perfect for the laying of eggs. Many man-made drainage areas, including gutters stagnant water that will allow multiple generations and mosquitoes to breeding mature. Without some type of protection, our yards can become a significant breeding ground for growing mosquito population.

In Tampa Bay we have so much freshwater for mosquito breeding, that is not surprising that we have such a problem with the mosquito population. We build retension ponds to pool runoff, we sprinkle our yards to three times a week, we build underground drain systems that never drain, we have gutters to divert and hold rainwater, we have bird ponds, water features and potted plants that hold water and we feel we are immune to an eminent attack from bloodsucking mosquitoes. Remember, many of the freshwater variety of mosquitoes the live in the Tampa Bay area, also carry most of the diseases that we fear the most. In each case, many of the areas that allow for prolific population growths of mosquitoes have been created by our development. You don't need to live near a swamp water conservation area to have a problem with fresh water mosquitoes, but you do need to manage your environment to enjoy the amenities you have.

We all wanted to live in the Tampa Bay area, I've spent 55 years here and I love it. We need to understand however, that we do live in a saltwater coastal area. Many of us are surrounded by estuaries and coastal marshes that allow for a tremendous opportunity for a saltwater variety of mosquito to breed them proliferate. These areas are very difficult to treat on a broad scale basis by mosquito control districts. These areas are usually very environmentally sensitive, and somewhat impenetrable by standard mosquito spraying applications. Is incumbent on the individual property owner, to be diligent in protecting your personal environment from the onslaught of salt water mosquitoes. There are unique applications that may well with backyard environments for mosquito control and even the most exposed saltwater environment.

Tree borne mosquitoes are unique problem, but one that seems to be quite prevalent here in the Tampa Bay area. Many of us enjoy yards that are shaded by large mature trees and shrubs. Many oak trees grow pockets over time, that hold water. You never see them, but they are growing mosquitoes that you can't imagine. Many of the luscious tropical palms that we have in our yards, bird of paradise, as well as many other species of tropical plants can hold pockets of water, the provide tremendous opportunities for mosquitoes the lay eggs. A comprehensive approach to mosquito control includes a survey of your outdoor environment to detect any potential opportunities for the growth of tree borne mosquitoes.

Mosquito Life Cycle

Mosquito eggs don't sound very exciting, but the ability of a mosquito to reproduce and the areas in which they can lay eggs is almost mind-boggling. Here in Florida, the environment is perfect for mosquito reproduction and laying eggs. After a mosquito egg is laid, it can lie dormant for up to several months, even a year are more, until a time when water washes over them.

Mosquitoes can lay eggs year round, and all it takes is the introduction of water and the lifecycle of the mosquito takes off. Adult mosquitoes mate within the first few days after emerging. The male locates the females by listening for the sounds of their wings, which run flap up to 500 beats per second. The mosquitoes join in-flight; the male passes sperm to the females, perpetuating the mosquito lifecycle. The male dies shortly after mating occurs. Female mosquitoes have the capability of laying up to 100 - 300 eggs every 7-10 days after mating only once, and will typically lay 3 to 5 groups of eggs in their lifetime.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs on the surface of fresh or stagnant water and damp ground. The water can be in tin cans, barrels, a hole in a tree, horse troughs, ornamental ponds, swimming pools, puddles, creeks, ditches, catch basins or even saltwater marsh areas. Mosquitoes prefer water sheltered from the wind with grass and weeds. Some mosquitoes have the ability to lay their eggs on just damp soil; with some eggs being able to resist drying out, until the areas are flooded by water from rains or tidal flow. The Florida Department of Agriculture, in a study to count the number of mosquito eggs in a Central Florida pasture, estimated 100,000,000 eggs per acre in sod samples that were taken. Mosquitoes usually lay their eggs at night. They lay their eggs one at a time, sticking them together to form a raft of 100 to 300 eggs at a time. The raft of eggs looks like a speck of soot floating on the water and is about a quarter inch long and an eighth of an inch wide.

           Mosquito Larvae in Tampa

Mosquito larvae stage is an interesting time in the lifecycle of the mosquito. It brings back memories of when my boys were little, and they bring in a jar of little wigglers that they got out of the neighbors birdbath, or from coy pond in our backyard the never seemed to circulate right.

Mosquito larvae are commonly called wigglers and must live in water from 7 to 14 days depending on the water temperature. Larva must come to the surface at frequent intervals to obtain oxygen through a breathing tube called a siphon. Culex and Aedes larva, since they do not have a breathing tube must lie parallel to the water surface in order to get a supply of oxygen through a breathing opening. During growth, larvae molt (sheds its skin) four times. The stages between molts are called instars. At the fourth instar, the larva reaches a length of almost a half an inch. When the fourth instar larva molts it becomes a pupa and moves on to the next stage of life.

Much of the activity that is provided by the mosquito control districts in the Tampa Bay area is related to the study and treatment of mosquito larvae. During this stage of life it is common for the districts to count and estimate mosquito populations based on the number of larvae found in certain areas.

Mosquito pupa, commonly called" tumblers", must live in water from 1 to 4 days, depending upon the species and water temperature. Pupa may be quite active during this stage of life.

The pupa is lighter than water and therefore floats at the surface. It takes oxygen through two tubes called" trumpets". When it is disturbed it dives in a jerking, tumbling motion and then floats back to the surface. The pupa does not eat. The metamorphosis of the mosquito into the adult is completed within the pupa stage.

The adult mosquito splits the pupae case, like a cocoon any merges to the surface of the water where rests until its body can dry and harden.

Adult mosquitoes are truly our adversaries, they've been around for centuries. In the state of Florida, they were the main reason for slow development and growth of the population here. A few facts about adult mosquitoes are:

The attractive level of each individual to biting mosquitoes is based on a complex interaction of many chemical and visual signals such as body heat.

The life span of the mosquito varies widely. In some species about one third of the adult population dies daily. While the typical male lives only for about two weeks the female may survive up to six months or more depending on the species in the time of year.

In the short run, an adult mosquito can emerge from the pupae stage within a week to 10 days from the time the eggs are laid. In some cases where the environment is not right for development, this process can run as long as a year from the time the eggs are laid until the mature adult mosquito emerges.

Environment is the factor for increasing the generations of breeding and maturing mosquito populations. During the wet warm months of spring and summer and into the fall is very easy to produce 3 to 4 generations of mature biting mosquitoes annually. The environment in Tampa Bay seems to be one that was made for mosquito proliferation.

Outdoor living is one of the great pleasures of owning a home or business, whether you’re entertaining guests, enjoying a quiet evening, or simply taking in the natural beauty of your surroundings. In Florida, with its warm, humid climate and abundance of outdoor amenities, many people spend much of their time outside, particularly in the evening hours when the weather is at its most pleasant. Unfortunately, the presence of mosquitoes can quickly turn a peaceful moment into an uncomfortable, frustrating experience. Beyond their irritating bites and constant buzzing, mosquitoes are also vectors for various serious diseases, including West Nile virus, Zika virus, and Eastern equine encephalitis.

Given the health risks and the inconvenience mosquitoes present, it’s important to take proactive steps to protect your outdoor spaces from these unwelcome intruders. In this article, we’ll explore the impact mosquitoes have on outdoor living, why it’s crucial to address mosquito problems, and the various solutions available to homeowners and businesses to ensure that their outdoor environments remain safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Why Mosquito Control is Critical for Outdoor Living

Florida is home to a diverse range of mosquitoes, and the state’s tropical climate provides an ideal breeding ground for these pests. From stagnant water in flowerpots and birdbaths to puddles around swimming pools and fountains, any small amount of water can serve as a breeding site. Unfortunately, the mere presence of mosquitoes on your property is not just an inconvenience—it poses serious health risks. Mosquitoes are well-known vectors of several deadly diseases, including the Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects, and the West Nile virus, which can lead to neurological problems and even death.

Even if you are not directly affected by the diseases that mosquitoes carry, their bites can still result in discomfort, ranging from itching and swelling to allergic reactions. In addition to the physical effects, mosquitoes can significantly hinder the enjoyment of outdoor activities. Whether you’re hosting a backyard BBQ, lounging by the pool, or simply enjoying an evening outdoors, the constant presence of mosquitoes can make these activities unbearable. For businesses with outdoor spaces, the discomfort caused by mosquitoes can even impact customer satisfaction and revenue, particularly for restaurants, hotels, and event venues.

The Challenge of Traditional Mosquito Control Methods

When it comes to controlling mosquitoes, many homeowners and businesses rely on traditional methods such as sprays, citronella candles, and mosquito zappers. While these methods may provide some short-term relief, they are often ineffective and may even pose additional risks. For example, store-bought insect sprays can be harmful to humans and pets, especially if they are applied improperly. Similarly, citronella candles and mosquito coils may offer some protection in small, confined areas, but they cannot cover large outdoor spaces and require frequent reapplication.

Mosquito zappers, while satisfying to watch, are also ineffective in controlling the overall mosquito population. They only attract and kill mosquitoes that come into direct contact with the device, leaving the rest of the pests unaffected. Moreover, many of these devices kill beneficial insects like bees and butterflies, which are vital to pollination and the overall health of the ecosystem. The limited coverage, harmful chemicals, and short-lived effectiveness of these methods make them impractical for long-term mosquito control, particularly in areas like Florida, where mosquitoes are a persistent and year-round problem.

The Advantages of Mosquito Misting Systems

In contrast to traditional mosquito control methods, mosquito misting systems provide a more effective and long-term solution. These systems are designed to provide continuous, automated pest control by releasing insecticide at regular intervals, ensuring that mosquitoes and other pests are eliminated before they can become a nuisance. The systems are typically installed around the perimeter of your property and consist of a reservoir, misting nozzles, and a control panel that operates the system.

The beauty of mosquito misting systems lies in their ability to deliver targeted, consistent pest control. Unlike sprays or candles, misting systems can cover large areas of your property, including hard-to-reach spots such as under trees and bushes. They use eco-friendly, non-toxic insecticides that are safe for humans and pets but deadly to mosquitoes and other pests. This means that you can enjoy your outdoor space without worrying about the health risks associated with traditional pesticides.

In addition to the insecticide, many modern mosquito misting systems also include a timer or remote control feature, which allows homeowners to schedule when the system will activate. This means that you can set the system to run at night when mosquitoes are most active or in the early morning hours when the temperature is cooler. By eliminating mosquitoes before they even have a chance to enter your outdoor spaces, misting systems provide a more effective and hassle-free solution to mosquito problems.

           How Mosquito Misting Systems Work

The way mosquito misting systems work is simple but highly effective. First, the system is installed by placing misting nozzles around the perimeter of your property, typically in areas where mosquitoes are most likely to congregate, such as near water features, dense foliage, or entryways. These nozzles are connected by tubing to a central reservoir that holds a specially formulated insecticide. The system is programmed to release small bursts of mist at regular intervals, spraying the insecticide in a fine mist that coats the areas where mosquitoes rest.

The misting system works in two ways: first, it kills mosquitoes on contact, and second, it creates a barrier that repels new mosquitoes from entering the area. Because the system operates automatically and is set on a schedule, you don’t have to worry about remembering to spray or reapply products. This means that your property remains protected from mosquitoes 24/7, regardless of whether you’re at home or away.

Another advantage of mosquito misting systems is their ability to target specific types of pests. For example, while many systems are designed to control mosquitoes, some can be adjusted to address other insects like flies, wasps, and even spiders. This versatility makes misting systems an ideal choice for properties that are plagued by multiple types of pests.

Whether you have a large estate, a small backyard, or a commercial property, a professional pest control service can ensure that your mosquito misting system is installed in the optimal locations to provide the best coverage.

A professional pest control company will take care of all of this for you, making sure your system is functioning properly and delivering optimal results.

The Growing Problem of Mosquitoes and Outdoor Pests

The increasing prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus, Zika virus, and dengue fever, has made effective mosquito control more important than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mosquitoes are among the deadliest creatures on earth due to their ability to transmit a range of harmful diseases. Beyond health concerns, mosquitoes can also be a nuisance that interrupts the enjoyment of outdoor spaces. The itching and swelling from mosquito bites, combined with the constant buzzing, can make spending time outside a miserable experience.

Spiders, midges, and other flying insects such as no-see-ums are another common nuisance that plague outdoor spaces, especially in areas with high humidity and proximity to bodies of water. These pests can be more than just an irritation—they can cause significant damage to property or be harmful to those with allergies. For instance, the presence of spiders around pools or patios can create an unsettling environment for guests, while the biting midges can make it unbearable to enjoy the lakefront or garden areas.

Given the range of pests that can invade outdoor spaces, it’s no wonder that effective pest control has become a priority for homeowners and businesses alike. The goal is not just to eliminate these pests but to prevent future infestations, all while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your property. This is where modern pest control solutions, such as mosquito misting systems, become invaluable.

Why Traditional Pest Control Methods Fall Short

In the past, homeowners have relied on a variety of traditional pest control methods to address outdoor pests. These methods often include the use of sprays, bug zappers, and citronella candles. While these options may provide some temporary relief, they often fall short when it comes to long-term effectiveness and safety. Sprays, for example, can be harmful to the environment, pets, and people. Citronella candles, while pleasant in smell, often fail to cover a large area and only offer minimal protection.

Furthermore, many of these solutions require constant maintenance and reapplication. For homeowners who are looking for a more reliable, convenient, and sustainable solution, a more permanent system, like a mosquito misting system, is a far better choice. Mosquito misting systems are designed to provide continuous, automatic pest control that is both effective and discreet. With the right system in place, you can rest assured that your outdoor spaces will be protected from mosquitoes and other pests for the long term.

The Science Behind Mosquito Misting Systems

At the heart of mosquito control solutions like misting systems is the use of eco-friendly insecticides that specifically target pests like mosquitoes while remaining safe for humans and pets. These systems are typically installed around the perimeter of a property, where pests are most likely to enter. The system is connected to a reservoir that holds the insecticide, which is automatically sprayed through a series of strategically placed misting nozzles at regular intervals.

The misting process works by dispersing a fine mist of insecticide into the air, where it settles on vegetation, surfaces, and the ground. The insecticide kills pests on contact and also repels future mosquitoes from entering the area. Because mosquito misting systems are programmable, they can be set to run at specific times, such as at night when mosquitoes are most active, or during the early morning when temperatures are cooler.

One of the key benefits of these systems is their ability to provide coverage in hard-to-reach areas, such as under trees or along fences, where mosquitoes typically hide during the day. This targeted application ensures that pests are eliminated in areas where they are most likely to breed and rest, reducing the overall pest population on your property.

The Benefits of Professional Mosquito Control Systems

While there are DIY mosquito misting systems available, the benefits of hiring a professional pest control company to install and maintain the system cannot be overstated. Professional companies have the expertise to design a system that is tailored to the specific needs of your property, taking into account factors like layout, landscaping, and pest activity.

In addition to installing a custom misting system, professionals also conduct thorough property surveys to identify potential problem areas where pests may be breeding. These surveys often involve checking for standing water, which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and suggesting ways to eliminate these areas. With a professional mosquito control service, you can also expect regular maintenance and system checks to ensure optimal performance.

How Outdoor Cooling Systems Complement Pest Control

While pest control is essential, many homeowners are also looking for ways to make their outdoor spaces more comfortable during hot summer months. This is where outdoor cooling systems can complement pest control efforts. By installing misting fans or cooling systems in strategic locations, you can reduce the temperature around your outdoor living areas, making them more inviting for guests and family members.

Cooling systems that use fine mist or water vapor not only lower the temperature but also work in conjunction with pest control systems. The mist from these fans helps to keep mosquitoes at bay by creating a fine, wet environment that is unfavorable to their survival. As a result, your outdoor spaces become more comfortable and less prone to pest infestations.

Whether you're hosting a summer party, enjoying a family dinner on the patio, or simply relaxing by the pool, the combination of mosquito control and cooling systems allows you to make the most of your outdoor spaces, even in the hottest months. This integrated approach ensures that you can enjoy your outdoor spaces without worrying about pests or the heat.

The Importance of a Comprehensive Approach to Pest Management

While mosquito misting systems and outdoor cooling are essential tools for managing pests, it’s important to take a holistic approach to pest control. This means addressing the entire ecosystem of your property and making proactive changes that reduce the likelihood of pest problems. Regular maintenance of your yard, such as trimming bushes, cleaning up debris, and eliminating standing water, is critical to preventing pests from making your property their home.

Additionally, working with a pest control company that offers a range of services, from mosquito control to spider and midge management, ensures that all aspects of your pest problem are addressed. A comprehensive approach also includes regular check-ups to monitor pest activity and adjust treatments as needed. By staying ahead of potential infestations, you can maintain a pest-free environment year-round.
